Young Champions

The Young Champions Programme

Young Champions is a Tees Valley Sport Sports Science development programme for Y5 children who have been identified as having an ability, passion and interest for sport. The programme delivers practical activity at Teesside University. It enables children to mix with like-minded young people and to be inspired by the facilities and elite athletes present at the University.

Three half day sessions are experienced by participants.  The programme will focus on four main pillars of success for well-rounded athlete development:

• Body – Have an understanding of the physical attributes of an elite athlete and how to prepare your body for competition.
• Head – Ensuring athletes have the right mind-set to compete and able to set achievable goals.
• Heart – Demonstrating determination, promoting the right values and being strong role models in and outside of sport.
• Team – Maximising your support systems to have the most effective “Team You” possible.

Applying to Be a Young Champion

Year 5 Pupils are nominated and enrolled by their school to take part in the programme. Schools should consider Year 5 children who have all round sporting promise and are considered gifted and talented in this context. Children who are already a member of a community club will especially benefit from the programme however this should not exclude any child who shows potential but is not a member of a club.

Please see the documents below for more details;

The school is responsible for arranging transport to the sessions and making any due payments to Tees Valley Sport. There is a cost per pupil of £85 for the programme.

Celebrating Success

Each Young Champion graduates from the programme with an achievement certificate. Their achievements will be celebrated with press and media releases. All participants will be awarded a Young Champions TShirt.
