Calculating your carbon footprint

We are approaching a critical point in the global climate crisis. Until net zero carbon emissions are achieved, global temperatures will continue to rise, causing profound and irreversible damage to Earth’s natural systems.

The UK has committed to reaching net zero by 2050. Achieving this ambition will require collective action across every sector. Sport and physical activity are no exception. To play our part, we must understand our own carbon footprint and take meaningful steps to reduce emissions wherever possible.

While the emissions from individual grassroots sports clubs may be small, their combined impact is significant. Collective action across the sector has the potential to deliver truly transformative change.

By taking responsibility for our own emissions, we can also inspire our members and communities to reduce their environmental impact—helping to protect the planet for generations to come.

Understanding our starting point is essential. Without a clear baseline of our carbon footprint, it is impossible to accurately measure progress or demonstrate the impact of our actions.

Sport England have developed a Beginners Guide to help with calculating a carbon footprint.
