Stockton-on-Tees

Stockton-on-Tees is a place of stark contrasts, characterised by a wide disparity between affluence and deprivation.  Some areas are highly affluent, offering a high quality of life with excellent amenities and strong property markets, making them desirable places for families and professionals.  These areas are marked by economic prosperity, low crime rates, and robust community services.  In contrast, other areas within the borough face significant challenges including economic disadvantage, unemployment and limited access to opportunities.  These communities often experience issues related to lower educational attainment, inadequate infrastructure and social neglect.

Despite these challenges, many of these communities demonstrate resilience and a strong sense of solidarity among residents.  Addressing disparities in Stockton-on-Tees requires focused investment and support in economic development, education, healthcare and community infrastructure.  Improving access to resources and health services, including both physical and mental health can create jobs, enhance health outcomes and empower individuals to succeed.  By tackling inequalities, Stockton-on-Tees can foster a more equitable and prosperous environment that all residents can lead healthier, more fulfilling lives and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive community.

Sport England has committed to a transformative expansion of its place-based partnerships, with an investment of £250 million over the next five years to engage with 80-100 new communities. This initiative is central to Sport England’s ‘Uniting the Movement’ strategy, which aims to promote physical activity and address inequalities across England.

A place based approach is a strategy that focuses on improving outcomes in a specific geographic area by addressing local needs and leveraging local assets and resources.  This approach involves engaging with communities, understanding their unique challenges and opportunities and tailoring interventions to fit the local context, with the goal of achieving sustainable and impactful change in that area.
