Officially Swimming
Over 20 young volunteers qualified as ASA Club Timekeepers in October. The group of 14–18 year olds took their timekeeping practical tests at the Autumn Series weekend on 18th/19th October at the Neptune, Middlesbrough having undertaken a theory session during the previous week.
There was a 100% pass rate from the group and these young volunteers have taken an introductory step to the world of officials. This course is part of a number of courses that have ran in the Tees Valley aimed at young volunteers, including the Young Aquatic Organisers Award which looks at planning and delivering aquatic events.
Jane Roche, Tees Valley Sports Swimming Development Officer, has organised the courses and says “the drop out age is swimming is young in relation to other sports, and so anything we can do to encourage these swimmers to continue being an active part in the sport is essential. This course is also important to introduce a younger generation of officials into swimming which will benefit the sport as a whole”.
Watch out for these young officials at an event near you!
