Showing the impact

To make best use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium, schools need to ensure the funding is integral to their PE and sport – and whole school – improvement planning. To maximise its impact, this means involving senior leaders, governors, school staff, parents and pupils in the process – not just leaving it all to the PE co-ordinator.

An effective improvement process might involve the following steps:  


Sport England, with support from the County Sports Partnership Network, the Association for Physical Education, the Youth Sport Trust, sports coach UK and Compass, has produced a set of four videos showing the impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium in schools. The videos cover the following key messages.

1. Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity:

  • A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work
  • The physical health and emotional wellbeing of pupils are both vitally important.

2. A tool for whole school improvement:

  • PE and sport can improve pupil outcomes across the whole curriculum
  • PE and sport develop skills that pupils need to be competent learners
  • Character is developed by participation in PE and sport
  • PE and sport can have a positive influence on the school ethos.

3. Increase staff confidence and skills to teach PE:

  • PE and sport are not the same thing
  • Teachers should have the confidence to deliver PE as it is a statutory part of the National Curriculum
  • Only teachers should deliver PE, but coaches play a key role in enhancing provision and in supporting teachers' professional learning.

4. More children - more sports - more competition:

  • Many pupils will be engaged by less-traditional activities and formats; there are lots to choose from!
  • Coaches, adult volunteers and the pupils can all help to broaden provision
  • Every child has the right to take part in competition, regardless of their ability.

School websites

It is a condition of grant that schools publish information on the Primary PE and Sport Premium on their websites. Information must include: how much funding your school receives; how you have spent/are planning to spend the money, including a costed breakdown; what impact you have seen on pupils' PE and sport participation and attainment PLUS how you plan to sustain the impact. This should be updated by 4th April 2016 to show reporting/planning for 2015/16.

It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:

1.the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles

2.the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement

3.increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

4.broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

5.increased participation in competitive sport.

Ofsted inspectors will assess and report on how effectively the school is using the premium when making judgements on the quality of the school’s leadership and management. This may involve meetings with senior leaders and governors and listening to pupils and parents. Extra-curricular clubs as well as PE lessons may be observed. In particular, Ofsted will look for improvements in pupils’:

  • achievement in PE

  • participation in school sport

  • health and wellbeing

  • engagement and achievement in school generally.
