Young Leaders are well rewarded

For 26 budding hockey stars the recent England Hockey Leadership Award – ran by Tees Valley Sport at the University of Teesside – proved to be a successful stepping stone on the path towards taking up leadership, coaching and umpiring roles within local hockey.

The three-day course is the perfect introduction to many of the key non-playing elements of hockey and attracted a mix of boys and girls – all aged 13 and over – who were interested in expanding their own knowledge and experience.

The mix of practical and theory-based workshops proved to be a hit with the young people who attended working extremely hard over the three days to achieve a fantastic 100% pass rate – with some of the participants even gaining an extra Foundation Umpiring Award qualification along the way.

Tees Valley Sport’s Hockey Development Officer, Anne Whitworth, was delighted at their success;

“This shows just how dedicated many of our local players are to learning the game. Tees Valley Sport has an excellent player pathway that allows young players to not only develop their playing skills but also gain experience in many other areas of the game. Gaining these qualifications will create some wonderful opportunities for these young people in the future and hopefully many of them will continue to develop as hockey leaders.”
