Teesside Touch Rugby Triumph
On Tuesday 15th November Touch Rugby League was formally recognised at Teesside University when a Touch Rugby League Society was established.
Touch Rugby League sessions started early November at the University Campus with the view to running a six week programme. However, the sessions have been so successful it was acknowledged the club deserved official society status. Over the past six weeks in excess of forty participants have played Touch Rugby League with average sessions attracting around 30 students.
In order for the student's to continue the sessions a committee has now been established and the club are looking to begin fixtures soon.
Jade Mackie, Regional Development Officer stated 'Teesside University have shown how through some hard work and commitment a new venture can be extremely successful. The Touch Rugby League sessions have brought together a number of players from different sports and provided the sessions with a really vibrant atmosphere.
A huge thank you is extended to Michael Heap who has been coaching the sessions and is now President of the committee, in addition all the new committee members deserve recognition for becoming involved in a club which I can see going from strength to strength.'
Adam Houston, League for All Officer stated 'Touch Rugby League is an exciting way for people to get involved in the sport without being afraid of the physical element. The initial interest at Teesside was great, and I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to retain and build upon the initial good numbers, so when the students themselves suggested establishing a Society, I was more than happy to offer my support. The Student Union at Teesside have been very supportive also and I look forward to seeing the Club go from strength to strength'.
