Sport Unlimited hits new heights

The latest Sport Unlimited figures for the third year of the project have continued to grow with the best retention figures recorded to date for an academic term. The Tees Valley had the second highest retention rate in England for Year 2 of the scheme and we are working closely with sports development teams in each of our local authority partners to encourage more young people to try a variety of sports during our final year of delivery. We are also engaged with the County Sports Partnership Network and Sport England to explore options to continue the scheme beyond March 2011, and hope to have further news on these proposals in November following the governments Comprehensive Spending Review.

Partners are currently submitting figures for the September  reporting period for the summer term and an initial analysis has shown a substantial increase in young people taking part in the Sport Unlimited programme.  Over 2,500 young people have been retained for at least 60% of the sessions. We are delighted at this success and big thanks must go out to our delivery partners including, local authority sports development teams, NGBs, clubs, Leisure Trusts, community groups and schools & Colleges

Stockton have retained over 1000 young people on activity programmes during the spring and summer months and are now well on their way to exceeding their three year targets. Activities have included rock climbing and unicycle hockey. A partnership with Maltby cricket club has proved especially popular attracting large numbers of girls and boys to the sport.

Darlington had a strong focus on cycling during the past term of delivery with a variety of taster sessions delivered in partnership with British Cycling. The programmes have been delivered across the town and covered disciplines in road, track, cyclo cross and BMX.

Hartlepool has delivered a variety of programmes with streetleague football activities proving very popular, and are also progressing well against their target of attracting more "semi sporty" children and young people to play sport on a regular basis.
