We commissioned NWA Social Research to conduct an on-line survey to gain insight into sports coaching in the area. The views of all local coaches, leaders and activators (including those who no longer coach) were sought in order to gain a better understanding of the motivations, needs and barriers facing sports coaches in the Tees Valley area. Results are based on 63 completed on-line surveys.
One of the particular aims of the work was to look at ways of encouraging women and people from BME and other minority groups to become sports coaches, as these groups are currently known to be under-represented in this sector. A number of reviews have already been carried out by organisations such as Sport England, Women in Sport and Sports Coach UK to look at ways of addressing this imbalance and therefore where possible in the following summary of results, comparative findings and recommendations from these reviews have been included to add insight into how to engage women and minority groups and overcome barriers to their participation.
