Future Sport

Future Sport

Future Sport is a charity dedicated to supporting young people and assisting their progress in sport in North East England. Focusing on the grass roots, Future Sport raises money in order to offer grants to promising youngsters from a wide variety of backgrounds. We particularly target our funds at the socially and economically disadvantaged, whatever sport they participate in.

Guidelines for applications

Future Sport Awards are given to applicants who are up and coming young, able and disabled sportspeople. Preferably, applicants should demonstrate their potential to improve and advance in their chosen sports. Future Sport also aims to target the socially and economically disadvantaged and help remove the associated barriers for participation in their chosen sport.

Purpose of grants

Grants are awarded, according to personal needs, towards: out-of-pocket training costs; travelling expenses; purchase of special food; additional cost of lodgings in training away from home; hire of facilities and coaching fees.

Procedure for applications and grant payments

Applications are considered from eligible young sportspeople, irrespective of race, sex or disability, whose permanent home is in the North East; Durham, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Tees Valley.

Application should be made by the individual on the Form and then submitted to Future Sport through the appropriate governing body.

The Future Sport Grants Panel meets three times per year. For 2012, applications should be submitted at least one week before the following dates: 9 March 2012, 10 August 2012 , 7 December 2012.

The Future Sport Grants Panel will make recommendations and once the grant has been approved, it will be paid to the applicant in accordance with the terms of the award. Grants, usually averaging £500, are to help towards training costs in the following 12 months.

Governing bodies are responsible for monitoring the recipient's progress. To assist Future Sport in demonstrating to donors the effectiveness of grant aid, a progress report during the period of the grant is encouraged. Further grants require fresh applications and are subject to availability of funds.

Future Sport seeks publicity for fund raising and relies on the co-operation of grant recipients in giving credit in interviews or other appropriate occasions, to the support they have received from Future Sport. The chances to fundraise are greatly enhanced by the presence of recipients in support of fundraising events and schemes.

Assessment criteria

The following criteria are used by the Grants Panel when considering applications:
The priority of Future Sport is to offer financial support for UP AND COMING, YOUNG, TALENTED SPORTSPEOPLE supported by their governing body, and who are NOT in receipt of National Lottery Funding. A well established senior international performer is not likely to be supported from Future Sport funds. Rather support will be forthcoming to individuals starting out on their sporting paths.

Financial Needs - as the grant is to assist with financial hardship, applicants must indicate the nature of their need.

Age - applicants should normally be between 10 and 20 years of age at the end of the period for which the grant is requested
