Update
The Tees Valley Future Champions project is now in its 3rd phase and we have been thrilled with the response that we have received. As well as the facilities access that athletes are provided with through our partners, have been able to provide Sport Science support to over 50 athletes and 50 coaches and parents.
The DCMS publication "Beyond 2012" sets out for the first time the breadth and depth of the sporting, economic, regeneration and community legacy that will be delivered after the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Future Champions programme is featured on page 53.
Athletes who have been successful on the project have attended a testing evening at Teesside University delivered by the Sport Science staff which focuses on their physical competencies around four main areas. Strength & Conditioning Masters students assess the results of the testing through video analysis as well as the scoring that takes place on the test evening and produce a performance profile wheel which is provided to the athlete, coach and parent:
They also receive a recommendation booklet that provides demonstrations of exercises on how to improve the areas they need to develop which will aim to improve their performance.
As well as being able to support the athletes, the coaches are also being provided with support and development opportunities through a physical competencies and injury prevention workshop which has been developed and is delivered on the same evening as the athletes testing by Matthew Wright, Matt Portas and Julie Sparrow.
